Focus Features has released a new trailer for Joe Wright’s historical drama Darkest Hour. Scripted by The Theory of Everything’s Anthony McCarten, the film stars an unrecognizable Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill and begins on the eve of World War II, chronicling Churchill’s difficult push to get England to stand up to Nazi Germany and enter the war rather than negotiate a treaty.

A new international trailer for Thor: Ragnarok has been released online showcasing some new footage specifically geared to the Chinese market overseas.

Lionsgate Premiere has released the first trailer for Gotti starring John Travolta. Directed by Kevin Connelly, the film spans three decades and follows the rise and fall of crime boss John Gotti as he tried to build the Gambino Crime Family both during and between his stints in prison.

In a new interview with Billboard, Danny Elfman offered up some new details from his Justice League score, including the fact that he’s going back to some iconic DC character themes from previous films and implementing them in new ways – including using John Williams’ iconic Superman theme, but spun in a different way.

Blumhouse Productions announced Friday that Jamie Lee Curtis has signed on to appear in the new Halloween reboot/sequel as her original character Laurie Strode, with the production house also confirming a release date of October 19, 2018; forty years after the premiere of the original film. John Carpenter returns as Executive Producer and will also score the film, with Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green behind the camera; with a script by Gordon Green and Eastbound & Down star Danny McBride.

A new trailer has been released for the Jackie Chan starrer The Foreigner. Directed by Casino Royale’s Martin Campbell, the film sees the 63 year old Chan playing Quan, a humble London businessman whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when his teenage daughter dies in a senseless act of politically motivated terrorism. IT Scores Biggest Horror Opening Ever – Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Monday September 11th, 2017) Mark Ellis, Perri Nemiroff, Jon Schnepp, John Rocha, Ashley Mova, and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) IT has largest opening weekend for horror movie all time; box office report

2) KKK Thriller ‘Black Klansman’ in the works from Spike Lee and Jordan Peele

3) The Purge 4 gets a new title; revealed to be a prequel set during first purge

4) First teaser trailer and poster released for Fifty Shades Freed

The box office slump is over as IT debuted in theatres this weekend to record breaking numbers, claiming the largest opening for an R-rated horror film ever as well as the largest opening weekend for a horror film of any MPAA rating. IT easily took the No 1 spot, delivering an estimated $117 million and shattering expectations. IT is also the second largest opening for an R rated feature, just behind Deadpool’s $132.4 million opening last February and is already the fifth highest grossing R-rated horror film of all-time after just three days in release.

THR is reporting that Denzel Washington’s son John David Washington is joining director Spike Lee and Get Out director/producer Jordan Peele in a new movie entitled Black Klansman. The movie will tell the true story of Ron Stallworth, a detective in Colorado Springs, Colorado, who in 1978 answered an ad in the local newspaper seeking new Klan members. Stallworth, who is black, was able to gather intelligence by pretending to be a white supremacist on the phone and sent a white fellow officer in his place for any in-person meetings. During his undercover work, Stallworth managed to sabotage several cross-burnings and other activities of the notorious hate group.

New details and a title have been announced for the fourth chapter in the Purge horror series. In an interview with Vulture, franchise creator James DeMonaco revealed the title will be The Purge: The Island, with the setting and concept taking place during the very first Purge, and centering on an experimental test on Staten Island.

Universal Pictures released the first teaser trailer and poster for Fifty Shades Freed, the third movie in the Fifty Shades franchise. Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson return as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, and expands upon the events from the 2015 and 2017 blockbuster films that have grossed almost $950 million worldwide.

Marvel unveiled a new TV spot for Thor: Ragnarok giving fans even more reason to look forward to the third entry in the Thor franchise. Though there’s only a couple snippets of new footage, the spot reinforces something special is coming from director Taika Waititi’s take on the God of Thunder.

Jerry Bruckheimer has officially given Josh Macuga an early wedding present. Just when it appeared the long in development sequel in the Bad Boys franchise with Bad Boys for Life was dead in the water, super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed to Yahoo Movies that another writer has come on board the project that he hopes will breathe new life in the project.

OPENING THIS WEEK

Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures has acquired the screen rights to Dracul, the first prequel novel authorized by the estate of Bram Stoker, to be developed as a potential directing vehicle down the line for IT helmer Andy Muschietti. Written by Dacre Stoker and J.D. Barker, the story is set in 1868, where a 21-year old Bram Stoker meets with an unholy evil that he traps in an ancient tower all the while documenting the events that will later become the basis for his story.

Suicide Squad 2 Delayed

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Thursday August 31st, 2017) Mark Ellis, John Rocha, Perri Nemiroff, Dennis Tzeng, Natasha Martinez and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) Suicide Squad 2 unlikely to start shooting until Fall 2018

2) Judge allows $900 million ‘Conjuring’ lawsuit against Warner Bros.

3) Opening this week

4) All female Lord of the Flies adaptation in the works at Warner Bros.

5) First trailer released for ‘You Were Never Really Here’ starring Joaquin Phoenix

6) Mail Bag

7) Live Twitter Questions

Despite reports that Suicide Squad 2 is being fast-tracked by Warner Bros., Variety’s Justin Kroll is now saying we can probably forget about seeing the second chapter of the Skwad anytime until possibly 2019. Kroll revealed on Twitter that the movie is unlikely to go into production until Fall 2018 because Will Smith has a busy schedule shooting Disney and Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin reboot along with the upcoming sci-fi movie Gemini Man. Initial reports had Mel Gibson possibly interested in directing, with The Shallows helmer Jaume Collet-Serra then revealed to be the front-runner before ultimately passing on the project.

In a report from THR, the legal woes Warner Bros. is having over its billion dollar Conjuring franchise looks to be heating up. WB failed in its effort to dismiss the $900 million dollar lawsuit brought by Gerald Brittle, author of the Warren’s The Demonologist. The bid was rejected by a Virginia judge and a trial is now tentatively scheduled for April 16th. In his lawsuit, Brittle alleges he had an agreement with the Warrens that prohibited them from a motion picture deal without his consent – with WB and New Line allegedly knowing about it all.

According to Deadline, Scott McGehee & David Siegel have made a deal at Warner Bros to write and direct a new version of Lord Of The Flies, based on the novel by William Golding. Though the duo are planning a faithful adaptation, the plan does involve one major twist – instead an all boys adaptation it will be all girls. There have been two adaptations in the past, in which young students are stranded on a remote island and become a savage social order.

An international trailer for Lynne Ramsay’s thriller You Were Never Really Here has been released online, via The Playlist. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joe, an ex-soldier/ex-FBI agent tasked with rescuing a politician’s teenage daughter from a brothel. The film had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to positive reviews, where it picked up Best Actor for Phoenix and tied for Best Screenplay with The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

Martin Scorsese Producing Joker Origin Story

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Wednesday August 23rd, 2017) Mark Ellis, Perri Nemiroff, Kristian Harloff, John Rocha, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) Joker origin story movie in the works with director Todd Phillips; may not star Jared Leto

2) Michael Kenneth Williams’ Role Cut From ‘Star Wars’ Han Solo

3) Studios Could Be Moving Towards a $30 Premium VOD Service Early Next Year

4) Ben Hardy, Gwilym Lee, and Joe Mazzello join Rami Malek in Bryan Singer’s Queen biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’

5) First trailer release for Netflix’s ‘Little Evil’

6) Mail Bag

7) Live Twitter Questions

Deadline shocked DC fans yesterday when they reported that Warner Bros and DC would be developing a new banner of DC films unconnected to their current DCEU; with the first project reportedly a Joker origin story set in the 80’s on the gritty streets of Gotham City. The Hangover’s Todd Phillips is currently in talks to direct with Martin Scorsese himself on as a producer. Deadline states that WB’s intention is to make a grounded, hard-boiled crime film that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie, and to make it more akin to one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.

Deadline reports that Michael Kenneth Williams is no longer a part of the new Star Wars stand-alone Han Solo movie. The trade states that due in part to the massive reshoots happening under director Ron Howard, the revamped production schedule conflicted with Williams commitment to other projects.

THR is reporting that Comcast and Amazon are joining Apple in developing a delivery system for premium Video on Demand titles that could be available for home viewing 30 days after debuting in theaters. This new premium service could be introduced in the first two months of 2018, with THR’s report saying movie fans could likely pay $30 dollars to rent a movie. Initial reports suggested that some studios considered making movies available for $50 dollars, 17 days after initial release, but the modest $30 price point is said to be “soothing the frayed nerves of theatres owners.”

Variety reports that Ben Hardy, Gwilym Lee, and Joe Mazzello have been cast opposite Rami Malek in the upcoming Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody directed by Bryan Singer. Production on the film will begin this fall, with Singer directing from a script by Justin Haythe. Hardy will play drummer Roger Taylor; Lee will portray lead guitarist Brian May and Mazzello will take on the role of bass guitarist John Deacon.

Netflix has unveiled the very first trailer for the upcoming original film Little Evil. Written and directed by Tucker and Dale vs Evil filmmaker Eli Craig, the horror comedy stars Adam Scott as a guy who marries the woman of his dreams, played by Evangeline Lilly, only to find out that his new stepson is actually the antichrist.

Deadpool 2 Images Tease Time Travel?

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Tuesday August 22nd, 2017) Mark Ellis, Clarke Wolfe, Jon Schnepp, Jeremy Jahns, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) Deadpool 2 Cable images tease time travel element

2) Wonder Woman crosses $800 million to become highest grossing superhero origin story movie all time

3) Opening this Week

New images of Josh Brolin as Cable in Deadpool 2 have appeared online thanks to the Twitter feed Universo X-Men. The all new looks have given fans something to talk about, mostly about the possible time travel plotline the images seem to introduce. Some of the commentators believe that the new looks are coming before the visual effects will be added, mostly for Cable’s cybernetic eye – while other fans believe the images offer up a clue to a time travel element that accompanies Cable’s backstory.

Wonder Woman has hit another record for the DCEU. The movie crossed $800 million worldwide and is now the second biggest movie of the year – behind only Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The Patty Jenkins-directed film has surpassed every expectation, both critically and commercially, passing $400 million at the domestic box office (the only summer movie to do so. And now, thanks to Box Office Mojo, that number puts Wonder Woman just past Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man film, making Wonder Woman the highest-grossing superhero origin story ever released.

THR is reporting that Amblin Entertainment has hired Stranger Things director Rebecca Thomas to direct the sci-fi film Intelligent Life. The project centers on a United Nations employee who monitors outer space and makes contact with a beautiful woman who may be an alien. Thomas will also do some additional writing on the script, which was originally penned by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly.

THR is reporting that Deadpool villain Ed Skrein is in negotiations to join the cast of Lionsgate’s Hellboy reboot. Skrein will play Major Ben Daimio, a member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense who can turn into a jaguar when angered or in pain. Skrein joins Ian McShane as Hellboy’s adoptive father, with Milla Jovovich playing the villainess. Stranger Things’ David Harbour was the first to join the reboot as Hellboy, with the actor recently dropping some info about the story.

According to a report from THR, the long rumored stand-alone Obi-Wan movie has finally come to fruition. The trade announced yesterday that Oscar Nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry is in early talks to helm the movie, with sources for the trade saying the talks are only in the very early stages – so early in fact that they don’t even have a script. If the deal goes through, Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm. Also in the report was the casual mention that Lucasfilm was also looking at a Yoda and Boba Fett movie though no more details were given. As for the Obi-Wan movie, no release date has been set nor is there confirmation that Ewan McGregor will be reprising his role.

According to THR, early tracking reports have come in for the movie IT and for Stephen King fans hoping for a successful debut – prepare to get happy. The trade reports that the Warner Bros. and New Line horror film could clear as much as $50 million or more on its first weekend in release, scoring the biggest September debut of all time. Insiders for Warners however, are being more cautious saying IT could land in the $40 million to $45 million range, noting that a sluggish marketplace and the fact that September has never been known for huge openings, could be a factor.

3) A24 has released the first trailer for The Killing of a Sacred Deer. The Yorgos Lanthimos film stars Colin Farrell as a top cardiologist who has a twisted relationship with a young man, played by Barry Keoghan, that threatens his family and career. The film also stars Nicole Kidman, Raffey Cassidy, Sunny Suljic, Bill Camp, and Alicia Silverstone.

THR is reporting that breakout star from Girl’s Trip, Tiffany Haddish, has joined the cast of Universal’s comedy Night School starring Kevin Hart. The movie will follow a group of misfits who are forced to attend adult classes in the long-shot chance they’ll pass the GED exam. Haddish will reunite with Universal and her Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee, on a script that is based on a story by Kevin Hart, and is written by Hart, Harry Ratchford, Joey Wells and Matt Kellard, with additional script work by Nick Stoller.

Thanks to a heads up posted by Screenrant.com, the short film known as The Nurse, has won The Conjuring universe short film contest. The competition was announced last month by Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg, and asked for aspiring filmmakers to craft their own short in the style of James Wan’s Conjuring franchise.
